The Rainbow Serpent!

This short story is a based on Indigenous Australian people.

Far off in Dreamtime, there were only people, no animals or birds, no trees or bushes, no hills or mountains.                                                                               The country was flat. Goorialla, the great Rainbow Serpent, set off to look for his own tribe. He travelled across Australia from South to North. He reached Cape York where he stopped.

He listened quietly to the wind and heard only voices speaking strange languages. “This is not my country, the people here speak a different dialect. I must look for my own people”. Goorialla left and his huge body made a deep hole where he came down. So he travelled North for many days. One day Goorialla heard loud voices, there was people singing and he said, “Those are my people”. Goorialla saw them from the shades between two rivers. He found his own people singing and dancing. He watched for a long time, then he came out and was welcomed by his people. He taught them to dance. And everyone looked up to Goorialla like a savior. However A big storm was gathering, so all the people built humpies for shelter.

Two young men came looking for shelter but no one had any room. The rain got heavier and the boys went to Goorialla and shouted out that the rain was heavy. Goorialla said, “All right come in now.” these men’s ran into Goorialla’s mouth and he swallowed them. The people got worry and found out that the Goorialla swallowed them, so they ran north after the Goorialla to the mountains. When the Goorialla fell asleep, they climbed the mountain and cut of his stomach so these 2 young boys could get free. But these two mens never came out, there was birds that came out from the Goorialla’s stomach.

We can compare this short story to Indiginous Australians formative belief system. Where, they believe and adhere to animist spirituals.
